How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

First, yes there is an obvious bias in a web developer writing an article about how often you should redesign your website. However, it’s a question I get asked a lot, more so in the last few years. With design & technology trends evolving so quickly it doesn’t take long for even the best web designs to start looking dated.

Gone are the days of set & forget websites where you could launch and then not touch it for years, let alone consider a revamp. The truth is though that in order to stay current, our websites need to as well.

The significance of first impressions cannot be overstated, and your coaching website is often the initial destination for individuals seeking information about your business before reaching out.

In the realm of websites, appearances matter, and people do judge a book by its cover. An outdated site can often project an unprofessional image, and influence how a potential new customer perceives your coaching business.

Take a look at these stats:
  • It takes about 50 milliseconds for users to form an opinion about your website
  • 38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content or layout is unattractive
  • 75% of consumers admit to making judgements on a company’s credibility based on the company’s website design.

time to Redesign Your Website
Your coaching skills may be exceptional, but if your website fails to reflect that, it could be driving away potential customers.

Don’t fret though! Keeping your website performing at its best doesn’t necessarily require hefty investments in frequent redevelopment. There are numerous simple steps you can take to ensure freshness and maximize the value of your initial investment.

While a complete redesign may eventually be necessary (which we’ll explore later), let’s first delve into smaller strategies that can help delay that as long as possible.

How to keep your current website fresh & optimised

To keep your coaching website fresh and delay a complete redesign, here are some actions you can take:

Post New Content Regularly

Keep your coaching website engaging and relevant by regularly publishing new content such as blog posts, articles, case studies, or client testimonials. This demonstrates your expertise and encourages visitors to return for fresh information.

It’s also very beneficial for SEO. A website that is regularly updated with fresh content will have better SERP results than one that has been left neglected.

Keep Content Up-to-date

Ensure all your coaching services are up to date. Remove any you’re no longer offering and add in any new ones. The same goes for your case studies, testimonials etc. If these are outdated it could leave people wondering if your offerings are outdated too.

Refresh Visual Elements

Make small visual updates to your website to give it a fresh look. This could include updating images, fonts, and colours, or adding new graphics. These minor visual enhancements can have a significant impact on the overall appearance.

Optimize User Experience

Continuously improve the user experience by addressing usability issues and optimizing website navigation. Simplify menus, ensure an intuitive layout, and provide clear calls-to-action to guide visitors through your site seamlessly.

Add Interactive Elements

Incorporate interactive elements such as quizzes, surveys, or interactive tools that engage visitors and encourage them to interact with your content. These additions can enhance user engagement and make your website more memorable.

Incorporate Social Proof

Showcase social proof by prominently displaying client testimonials, success stories, or case studies. This builds trust and credibility, providing potential clients with real-life examples of the value you offer.

Implement Responsive Design

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly and displays well across different devices. A responsive design adapts to different screen sizes, improving user experience and accommodating the growing number of mobile users.

Optimize Page Load Speed

Regularly monitor and optimize the loading speed of your website. Slow-loading pages can deter visitors and negatively impact user experience. Compress images, remove unnecessary plugins, and utilize caching techniques to improve performance.

Integrate Multimedia

Enhance your website’s appeal by incorporating multimedia elements such as videos, podcasts, or webinars. These dynamic elements can make your content more engaging and provide alternative ways for visitors to consume information.

Update Call-to-Action Buttons

Review and update your call-to-action (CTA) buttons periodically to ensure they are compelling and aligned with your current marketing goals. A well-designed and strategically placed CTA can boost conversion rates.

Conduct User Testing and Feedback

Continuously gather feedback from users through surveys, feedback forms, or usability testing. Use this feedback to make iterative improvements and address any pain points or areas of confusion.

Stay on top of SEO

SEO is constantly evolving. Have a look through your SEO settings from time to time and make sure they’re in line with current best practices.

By implementing these strategies, you can breathe new life into your coaching website, improve user experience, and maintain its freshness without undergoing a complete redesign.

These incremental updates will help you maximize the value of your existing website while meeting the evolving needs of your audience.

When is a complete redesign needed? Factors to consider:

The frequency of redesigning your coaching website depends on various factors, including your specific business needs, industry trends, technological advancements, and changes in your target audience.

Generally, a complete redesign every two to three years is a reasonable timeframe to ensure your coaching website remains fresh, functional, and aligned with current trends.

If you’re open to making incremental updates or smaller redesigns along the way though, you might be able to stretch this out further.

Otherwise, below is a list of signs to help determine if your website requires a revamp:

this is the sign you've been looking for

Outdated Visual Design

If your website’s design looks outdated or fails to reflect current design trends, it can give the impression of an unprofessional or stagnant business. A modern, visually appealing website is crucial for making a positive first impression.

Poor User Experience

If visitors struggle to navigate your website, find information, or encounter usability issues, it’s a clear sign that a redesign is needed. Difficulties in accessing content, slow loading times, or a lack of mobile responsiveness can negatively impact user experience.

Low Conversion Rates

Has the number of people visiting your website increased, or at least remained constant?

If your website isn’t effectively converting visitors into leads or clients, it may be time to reassess its design and user flow. A well-designed website should have clear calls to action, optimized landing pages, and intuitive pathways to drive conversions.

Incompatibility with Mobile Devices

mobile responsive website

With the increasing use of mobile devices for browsing, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly or responsive, you’re likely missing out on a significant portion of potential visitors.

Over half of your website traffic is coming from mobile phones, so if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, don’t even bother reading the rest of these. You need to get your website redesigned ASAP!

Branding or Business Changes

If your coaching business has undergone significant rebranding, changes in your target audience, or new service offerings, your website should reflect these updates. A redesign will ensure that your website accurately represents your current brand identity and business focus.

Slow Loading Speed

Redesign Your Website

In today’s fast-paced digital world, visitors have little patience for slow-loading websites. If your website takes too long to load, visitors may leave before they even see your content. A redesign can help optimize speed and performance.

Lack of Integration with Modern Tools

If your website lacks integration with essential tools or functionalities such as social media sharing, email marketing, or scheduling systems, it may be time to revamp and incorporate these features. Seamless integration enhances user experience and streamlines business processes.

Limited Content Management Capabilities

If you find it challenging to update or manage your website’s content due to limitations in the content management system (CMS) or the need for technical expertise, a redesign that focuses on improving content management capabilities can greatly benefit you.

Competitive Advantage

Your website serves as a crucial touchpoint for potential clients. A website that falls short compared to your competitors’ sites can create a perception that your coaching business is less professional or not up to industry standards.

If your competitors have websites that are more visually appealing, user-friendly, and engaging, they are likely to attract and retain more visitors. A redesign can help level the playing field and give you a competitive advantage.

Personal Confidence in your site

Are proud to share your website?

Your website is a reflection of your brand and serves as a digital representation of your business. If it doesn’t adequately represent your brand identity or convey the right message to your audience, this may result in you being hesitant to promote it. This is obviously detrimental to your marketing efforts.

Furthermore, having a website that you’re proud to share boosts your own confidence in your coaching business. It motivates you to showcase your expertise, attract clients, and actively promote your services.

A redesign can reignite your passion and enthusiasm, resulting in increased productivity and better outcomes for your coaching business.

Strategies to ensure a successful process when you do have to redesign your website

To ensure a successful redesign of your coaching website, consider implementing the following strategies:

  • Define Clear Goals and Objectives: Clearly articulate the goals and objectives you want to achieve with the redesign. This could include improving user experience, increasing conversions, aligning with your branding, or expanding your target audience. Having a clear direction will guide the redesign process.
  • Conduct Thorough User Research: Gain insights into your target audience’s preferences, behaviours, and expectations. Conduct surveys, interviews, or usability testing to understand their needs and pain points. Incorporate this user research into the redesign to create a website that resonates with your audience.
  • Collaborate with a Professional Web Designer or Agency: Consider partnering with a professional web designer or agency experienced in creating effective coaching websites. They can provide expertise, guidance, and creative solutions that align with your goals and ensure a successful redesign.
  • Develop a Content Strategy: Plan your content strategy before the redesign. Identify the key messages you want to convey, create a content hierarchy, and map out how your content will be organized and presented. This ensures that your redesigned website effectively communicates your coaching services and value proposition.
  • Implement SEO Best Practices: Integrate search engine optimization (SEO) techniques into the redesign process. Perform keyword research, optimize page titles and metadata, and ensure proper URL structure. Incorporate SEO-friendly design elements to enhance organic visibility and drive relevant traffic to your website.
  • Test and Optimize: Prioritize user testing throughout the redesign process to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement. Conduct usability tests to ensure intuitive navigation, test forms and conversion elements, and analyze user behaviour with analytics. Continuously optimize your website based on these insights.

search engine optimisation

  • Ensure Responsive Design: With the increasing use of mobile devices, prioritize responsive design. Optimize your website to provide a seamless experience across different screen sizes and devices. Test the responsiveness of your redesigned website to ensure it functions and displays correctly on smartphones, tablets, and desktops.
  • Incorporate Engaging Visuals and Multimedia: Enhance the visual appeal of your website with high-quality images, videos, and graphics that align with your brand. Use multimedia elements strategically to engage visitors and convey your coaching expertise effectively.
  • Focus on Conversion Optimization: During the redesign, pay attention to optimizing conversion elements. Ensure clear calls-to-action, streamlined forms, and persuasive copy to encourage visitors to take desired actions. Continuously test and refine these conversion elements to maximize your website’s conversion rates.
  • Plan for a Smooth Launch: Develop a launch plan to ensure a smooth transition from the old website to the redesigned one. Test the redesigned website thoroughly, address any technical issues, and have a backup plan in case of unexpected challenges. Communicate the redesign to your audience to generate excitement and awareness.

By implementing these strategies, you can increase the chances of a successful redesign of your coaching website.

It will help you create a visually appealing, user-friendly, and effective online presence that engages your target audience, drives conversions, and supports the growth of your coaching business.
